A Hand in the Moonlight

They say that enlightenment comes at unexpected times.  If you work at becoming enlightened, you miss the point.

One night in July, I walked out of my house at around 10 p.m. to a quiet night with a full moon hanging in the sky.  I enjoy summer, and sometimes walk out at night just to savor the warmth of the evening.

I was thinking of nothing in particular when I reached the sidewalk and held my hand up in front of me.  Ninety-three million miles away, on the other side of the earth, hidden by the night, the sun sent its light streaming in all directions.  Circling our planet, the moon received that light and deflected it our way.  There I was, a small creature walking on my planet, who held up its hand to see it illuminated at night in the sun's light.

For one glorious moment, I felt a profound connection with the universe, and a deep sense of inner peace and belonging.
